Psychiatry in Overland Park, KS

If you live in Overland Park and you have been trying to find a psychiatric provider who actually has openings, I may be able to help. I am Aliyah Ellis, APRN, PMHNP-BC, a board-certified psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, and I own Ellis Mental Health Co. My office is in Olathe, about ten minutes from south Overland Park, and I also see patients by telehealth anywhere in Kansas. I work with adults and adolescents age 13 and up.

Coming to my office from Overland Park

My office is at 13470 S Arapaho Dr., Suite 180, Olathe, KS 66062, just west of US-69 near 135th Street. For most of Overland Park that is a short drive:

  • South Overland Park (66213, 66221, 66223) — roughly ten to fifteen minutes straight across 135th Street.

  • Central Overland Park (66207, 66210, 66212) — about twenty minutes down US-69 or I-435.

  • North Overland Park (66202, 66204, 66206) — about twenty-five minutes, depending on traffic.

I see patients in the office on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. If a weekday drive does not work for you, we can do the same visit by video instead, and you can mix the two — in person when it helps, video when it is easier.

Why people come to me from Overland Park

Finding a psychiatric prescriber taking new patients in Johnson County is harder than it should be. I am a solo practice, which means I control my own schedule and there is no intake department between you and an appointment. It also means you see me at every visit, not a rotating panel.

What I treat

I focus on the conditions I see most often, and I have written in more detail about each:

  • ADHD — evaluation and medication management for adults and teens

  • Anxiety — generalized anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, OCD and PTSD

  • Depression — including treatment-resistant depression and mood changes I screen for bipolar

I also treat sleep problems, burnout and the overlap between all of the above, which is usually what people actually walk in with.

Your first visit

The initial psychiatric evaluation runs about ninety minutes. We go through your symptom history, what has and has not worked before, your physical health and current medications, and what you want out of treatment. I usually reach a diagnosis at that first visit rather than sending you back for a separate evaluation appointment.

Treatment is not automatically medication. Depending on what we find, it can include medication management, GeneSight pharmacogenetic testing, brief psychotherapy and skills work with me, a referral to an Overland Park therapist for ongoing weekly therapy while I handle the psychiatric side, or changes to sleep and routine. I am conservative with controlled substances: I do not prescribe stimulants routinely or automatically, and I prescribe benzodiazepines rarely and short-term.

Teens and families

I see adolescents from age 13. For anyone under 18, a parent or guardian needs to attend the first appointment with them. After that we work out together how much of each visit is the two of us and how much includes the family.

Insurance

I am currently in network with Aetna, Ascension (Smart Health), BCBS of Kansas, BCBS of Kansas City, Carelon Behavioral Health, Cigna and Quest Behavioral Health. Credentialing is still in progress with Oscar, Oxford and UnitedHealthcare (all Optum) — if you have one of those, call me and I will tell you where it stands.

Self-pay is $250 for the initial evaluation and $125 for follow-up visits, and I provide a Good Faith Estimate in writing before we start. See my policies page for the details.

Common questions from Overland Park patients

Do you have an Overland Park office? No. I have one office, in Olathe, and I would rather be straightforward about that than list an address I do not actually sit in. For most of Overland Park it is a ten to twenty-five minute drive, and telehealth is available if that is easier.

Are you a psychiatrist? I am a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, board certified (PMHNP-BC), with an MSN from Spring Arbor University and nine years of nursing experience. I diagnose psychiatric conditions and prescribe medication, including in Kansas without physician supervision.

Can I do the first visit by video and come in later? Yes. Plenty of my patients start on telehealth and come in person once they want a medication check or simply want to meet face to face.

Do you see patients outside Kansas? No. My license covers Kansas, so you need to be physically in Kansas for a telehealth visit — that includes the Missouri side of the metro, which I unfortunately cannot see.

What if I am in crisis? My practice is not emergency care. Call or text 988, or go to your nearest emergency department. Overland Park Regional Medical Center and AdventHealth South Overland Park both have emergency services.
